“She went home with someone else that night?”

Hearing the disbelief from my best friend’s mouth makes the events of my failed date sting that much more.

I would like to make it known, I have a lot more swagger than what it seems. I don’t normally ask a girl out, have her fail to recognize it’s a date, and then give me a high five–as if I’m her wingman–and take off with someone else.

No. Normally I’m the one taking the girl home but with Stella, it’s been one failed attempt after another and frankly, I’m done trying.

But thanks to my best friend getting married in Hawaii right before the school year starts, I’m stuck on a tropical island, watching Stella parade around in what she claims is a bathing suit.

Unfortunately, that’s not the worst of it, just the tip of the iceberg. Because what I think is going to be a relaxing vacation, avoiding the one girl I can’t seem to make it work with, has turned into a spectacle of being recruited as Stella’s doting fake fiancé so she can save face with an old “friend” from high school.

Now I’m navigating through purgatory while trying not to get turned on by the way she holds my hand or kisses my jaw. It’s all fake, that’s what I keep telling myself, even though it feels entirely too real.

“I’ve loved you since the first moment you started eating off my plate without asking, and that love has grown over the months into this overwhelming, all-consuming infatuation that I can’t shake.”

I have been obsessed with Romeo and Stella since we met them in See Me After Class. They were always being so cute and flirty in the background of Arlo and Greer’s story and when Meghan finally announced this book, I was beyond thrilled. Because honestly, Romeo and Stella are probably my favourite pairing from this series.

As with all Meghan Quinn books, Earn Your Extra Credit is hilarious, smart, packed with brilliant friendships and insanely sexy. Even when the cover doesn’t feature a half-naked man, the book is delicious. And that’s because she creates such wonderful characters that have so much to offer and such incredible writing. Earn Your Extra Credit kicks off with Romeo being miserable about his failing relationship with Stella. All he wants is her and she’s completely oblivious to it, which only makes every attempt that much more frustrating for Romeo. So he’s decided he’s going to keep his distance and focus more on getting over her and moving on than trying to get under her. Except, Stella throws a wrench in his plan. Like a big fat, fake engagement sized wrench.

“I don’t want her to know that she just blew my mind with that kiss. Or that she might have just ruined me for any other woman.”

I am such a big fan of the fake relationship/fiance/engagement trope, because it’s just so much fun. You get to watch two characters go through the motions of being a couple without being a couple and then actually fall in love. Romeo and Stella have lots of friendship history, so it’s not that hard for them to fall into this comfortable rapport and with Romeo’s deep rooted feelings for her, it’s obvious that he’s not going to be faking much. And boy, the chemistry between the two of them is just absolutely fantastic.

Brock Romero might just be my current favourite Meghan Quinn hero. He’s sexy, charming, funny, loyal and also incredibly handsome. And you get to see all of that and more as he goes through the motions of faking it for Stella. I loved how he was always there for her, showing up even when she thought he wouldn’t, supporting her even though it drove him insane. And Romeo also stepped up to help her out even when she didn’t ask him for it. Stella Garcia is a little bit of a mess and while I liked her, there was a lot I did not like about her. I love heroines who are aware of their shortcomings and who work hard to make the world theirs, but I find it hard to connect with heroines who have flat out decided that they don’t deserve happiness and good things in life and then ruin everything around them. That’s basically how Stella handled a lot of things, which did annoy me. In so many ways, I could see why she felt that way, but at the same time, it felt like an easy way out for her to avoid all the things that were happening.

“I think my heart just flew out of my chest and found Brock’s, where it’s clinging on for dear life.”

All that aside, this book was hot. I mean, it’s Meghan Quinn, of course the book is going to be hot. Romeo is so damn sexy when he’s in charge and he’s clearly been waiting for Stella for a while, so he’s not going to take it easy. Their chemistry was already so hot and steamy, especially since they were supposed to be faking it, but once the clothes start coming off…your Kindle will be on fire. Stella knows what she likes, Romeo knows what he likes and together, they are explosive. And when combined with their Hawaiian adventures, all the longing looks, Romeo’s feelings and the incredibly entertaining banter, you have a book that completely wins! Even my issues with Stella were negated by how much I enjoyed Brock Romero.

I really hope we get to see lots and lots of awesomeness for Cora and Pike, because that little bit of dying over the new guy was priceless.

Thanks to Meghan Quinn and Candi Kane PR for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
