Review: I should start this review by stating that in the back of my mind, I knew it was a romantic suspense, but I didn’t even register that till things started to get intense and exciting. But that’s just how awesome this book is, because it lulls you into this glorious island love and then suddenly, everything you know is ripped away from you. Tina Saxon created an incredible set of characters and a story that hooked me from the word ‘go’.
Romantic suspense is a new genre for me and I gotta admit, coming from a world of thrillers and true crime, I’m surprised it took me this long to discover this genre. But now I am deep in it and I never want to leave. Tina Saxon is a new-to-me author and I can tell you right now that I’m a fan and I am going to stay a fan for a long time to come.
First off, let me start by saying that Aspen and Ryker are so damn hot. Together, apart and just in general. Everything about them screams steamy, sexy and romantic. He’s a professional football player, sent off to Tahiti to recover from what is the worst mark on his record. Ryker might be a stud and a football player, but he’s not an alpha asshole and he doesn’t think that he can do everything or that the world revolves around him. If anything, he’s someone you might know at some point in your life. But when he meets Aspen, he’s drawn to her whiskey-coloured eyes, confidence and undeniable sex appeal. Aspen is an island girl, having been raised by her single father. Her dream is to one day own her own bakery, but till then she’s taking on millions of jobs, including working at the hotel where Ryker’s hiding out. And the first time she sees him is just the tip of the iceberg in terms of how wild these two are going to be.
“But you’ve ruined me. My thirst for whiskey now has only one taste. You.”
Their romance, the steam of their relationship – all of it is just so delicious. It’s hard to ignore just how hot they are together. Both of them have a lot of baggage and it’s not easy to just unload all of it at once. But the feelings are there and you can see it play tricks on them the whole time. And with her father and best friend breathing down her neck, Aspen feels like she’s doing something wrong. So much so that when Ryker invites her to visit him in New York, she doesn’t even think. She’s on the first flight out. And from there, the book completely transforms from a romance to so much more.
I absolutely loved Aspen. She’s lived such a sheltered life and it’s only with Ryker that she’s exposed to so many more things. There are parts of the outside world that she doesn’t know and she’s never experienced – snow, Netflix, American football, the list goes on! But Ryker is so patient and also really excited to show her all these things. And he’s great too. As a professional athlete, he’s got a bit of a chip on his shoulder, but he’s not written like your typical athlete. Ryker’s a good guy and doesn’t get into trouble of any kind. He’s not all good, though, because when he gets Aspen alone and in bed, he’s anything but good. But Ryker is incredible as a character. Tina created two beautiful characters and tossed them into the deep end of her story that is so captivating.
But guys, the twist! The big twist just totally throws you. I can’t say more than that, because talking about the second half of the book is basically a big fat spoiler. But you get to experience Aspen at her finest and see just how incredible a character she is and honestly, I did not see any of the twists and turns coming. I know that characters from her other books make an appearance, so obviously the world of Tina Saxon is vast and filled with amazingly intense moments that this book is full of. It’s got romance, tension, action, sports and absolute chaos at certain points. And through it all, you’re just rooting for Aspen and Ryker and their love. It’s worth it, trust me.
“We were two stars from different hemispheres, destined to meet. Her life might have been a wild distortion, but she made mine as clear as the water on the island. She just didn’t know her place in the universe yet. She found it. With me.”
Thanks to Tina Saxon and Grey’s Promotions for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
